Coaching is a relationship-based collaboration based in trust, respect and vulnerability

Coaching is also a process that creates shifts over time, meant to help achieve a bigger, overarching goal by achieving multiple small goals. Think laying down stepping stones as you walk towards the long-term destination.

For those reasons: The “Process” is…

Step 1 a 10-20 minute conversation (phone or video) where you and I can connect and get to know each other a little bit, and find out reason you are coming to coaching.  An ‘energy test’ so to speak to make sure we both feel that we are a good fit and set up to succeed!

Step 2 -Determining Your Needs from these three Packages Available:

  • Three Month Package – 8 hours
  • Six Month Package – 14 hours
  • 12 month Package – 26 hours

Our very first session is considered a ‘Discovery’ Session and is usually 2 hours in length, and it is preferred that we meet in person (depending on geographical distance), or by video conferencing.  This helps to create the ‘personal connection’ required for both of us to most effectively accomplish the above.

All of these packages include a TrueTilt ProfileTM strengths based assessment, which will be used throughout  our work together.

One on One Coaching You, as the ‘Coachee’, are in complete control at all times, and can set the pace and the speed with which we work through the process.  Most commonly – 1 hour sessions every 2 weeks, or 2 hour sessions every 4 weeks tend to work best. Again, it depends on what works best for you, your schedule, your goals, and your ‘process’.

You should know up front 😉

There will be homework.  You are responsible for being open to exploration, choosing your goals, creating action items that best suit you, and completing them.  I am responsible for holding the space for you to think, create your goals, and make choices that get you there…I am responsible for the ‘process’ so to speak.  While the process is one that promotes accountability, you are accountable to yourself to do your ‘work’, and for the outcome.

Laser Coaching (1-2 hours)

If we have established a relationship previously through a coaching engagement (ie. done the foundational work together), the possibility does exist for individual sessions of coaching to target specific issues, concerns or achieve individual smaller goals.

This is referred to as ‘Laser Coaching’ and takes place in one to two hours of coaching.

Coaching is a relationship-based collaboration based in trust, respect and vulnerability

Coaching in a Team environment involves the following at some point during the engagement:

  • Meeting with the Team Leader(s)
  • Meeting with individual Team Members
  • Meeting with the entire Team with the leaders present
  • Meeting with entire Team without the leaders present
  • Meeting with smaller groups that function as ‘smaller teams’ within the team

Team CoachingI understand that scheduling a ‘Full Team’ to be out of commission for any length of time can be challenging for everyone-so evenings and weekends are a possibility, or whatever flexibility that is required to schedule Team gatherings.

Typically, team related goals will require a longer time frame to work through and achieve and therefore only two packages exist for Teams:

6 Month Package

  • Only Recommended for very specific/narrow focus or individual Topics or Issues
  • 2 – 3 site visits, and independent meetings by phone or video conferencing as possible or necessary
  • Visits would typically be at the beginning, end and 1-2 check ins as needed
  • Total Hours Included (not including travel): 40 Active Coaching/Meeting Hours

12 Month Package

  • Much Better Suited to Most Team Coaching
  • 4-6 site visits as above, and independent meetings by phone or video conferencing as possible or necessary
  • Total Hours Included (not including travel): 100 Active Coaching/Meeting Hours

All Team Coaching will include True Tilt ProfilesTM for every team member, a Tilt365 Positive Influence Predictor (PIP)TM for Team Leaders, and a True Tilt Team Climate Profile, and True Tilt Team Agility Predictor Report, which will act as the foundation of our work together individually and as a team.

In a Team Environment, As the Coach I serve as an independent, unbiased facilitator that works on behalf of the entire team to help them succeed in achieving their goals.

  • Practice Owners-No time to Mentor/Coach?
  • Associate Veterinarians
  • New Graduates
  • Veterinary Students
  • The Art of Communication in Practice (non-veterinary specific)

If you have read ‘What is Coaching’ you will have read it is NOT Mentorship.  However, given my years of experience in practice-I would hope I have gained some wisdomJ, and the fact that I love to see people grow and learn I have included it in my services.  Mentorship will be provided in a ‘coach like’ fashion, but will have more a skills-based focus and specific training involved.

MentorshipMentorship can be requested by the individual themselves, or can be requested by a practice owner or team leader for another individual.  This is typically what happens in the Corporate Executive World-however, is still relatively foreign in the world of veterinary medicine and private practice.   In this case the coach is referred to as the ‘external coach’. Hired by someone in an organization, to coach another person to achieve goals that are mutually beneficial and agreed upon by both parties.

Often, practice owners or managers in a veterinary hospital setting find it difficult to take the time that true and effective coaching requires.  That is where an external coach can become exceptionally valuable. There is no question that you will see return on that investment.

Not Specific to Veterinarians: Client Communication

Client Communication is an Art.  Skills involved include History Taking, asking Open ended questions, Agenda Setting, Time management, Active Listening, Direct Communication, Building Trust in a Short amount of time, Non Verbal Communication Skills and the list goes on and on.

Specific to Veterinarians: I provide mentorship and coaching for performance in the following areas

  • Client Communication and related skills
  • Building strong client relationships
  • Building Confidence in the Exam Room
  • Increasing compliance for recommended diagnostics and treatments
  • Time Management
  • Writing Medical Records
  • Case Management
  • Working through the diagnostic process
  • Case Reviews for reflection and learning

My personal experience, as well as my training as a coach, work with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) on the complaints committee and as a Peer Advisor, and most recently 2 years as a volunteer coach for the Ontario Veterinary College Art of Veterinary Medicine program all comes together to provide extensive mentorship and perspectives in these areas.

As a Coach and someone that has worked with many veterinarians and team members, I am also aware that it is often our personal ‘stuff’ that gets in the way of us performing well at work, or with other people.  The beauty of working with a certified coach is we can effectively and efficiently identify when that is the case, and come up with personalized strategies to overcome your unique obstacles.

SpeakingI would be pleased to discuss speaking about any of the topics I have covered on my website, from my personal perspective.  I am a storyteller by nature, and am very passionate about all of these topics.

Please note-I am not a therapist, counsellor or have any formal training in mental illness and so am not able to speak about any of these topics from that perspective, or give specific advice related to any mental health issue from a diagnostic or treatment perspective.

Also-it is important to be clear that as a practicing veterinarian on a speaking engagement I will not engage in any discussion related to specific pet issues, diagnoses or treatments, people’s personal experience with their veterinarians, fees paid or charged, or give any advice on specific animal health issues.

If you would be interested in having me come and speak to your team, organization, association etc please feel free to contact me and we can discuss the details and co-create a presentation to fit your needs.
